It would be useful to know where you’re coming from to recommend places along the route. If you’ll be here Saturday of next week, Venice would be a great place to be. The Il Redentore festival will be going on with a great fireworks display over the lagoon at night. The Biennale is also running now – there are some interesting exhibits. http://www.venetia.it/
Verona http://www.virtourist.com/europe/verona/index.html , Padova http://www.turismopadova.it/index_padova , Ferrara http://www.artecultura.fe.it/index.phtml?id=312 , and Ravenna http://www.turismo.ravenna.it/index.php?lang=2 are all fairly close and have lots of interesting things to see and do.
Florence is an obvious choice – there are tons of things to see there. You could use Florence as a base for visiting Pisa & Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano or other places in Tuscany. http://www.italyguides.it/us/florence/florence_italy.htm
