Depends on what you are interested in. Yes, you can find places to stay and eat for that amount, but of course you will be wanting to see things, too. If you need to rent a car and want to drive around a lot, that will eat up a lot of your budget. Gasoline in Germany is roughly 3x as expensive as it is in the States. You could stay in one large city and just take in the sights there. For example, there are motels in Berlin you can rent for 40 – 50 E a night, and then there are day passes for public transportation for the surroundings and discounts on the attractions. There is plenty to do and see there. You could eat cheaply by buying some of the food in stores or fast food. Also, there are a lot of free attractions there. Keep in mind that 1000,– USD right now will only yield about 600,– E.
If you want to tour Germany, I think you will have to increase your budget.
As to what you should see, just research the internet. It depends on your interests, of course, but there is plenty to do and see for all interest groups.

You’ll probably need more than that. Because the Euro is worth more than the US dollar so 1,000 will only get you about 675 Euros. Each night will cost you around 75-150 Euros per night, and meals would cost you around 70 Euros for two to eat a day. And thats not including any sightseeing and touring, which would cost even more money..
So I’d try to save up 2,000 for the trip if I were you because 1,000 dollars will only last 3 days just to sleep and eat.

I agree with Kevin and peacelove, but it’s not totally impossible if you go backpacking, feed on “roadside snacks”, stay overnight at small hostels and use the special offers from German Railways to travel a German state on a low budget. But finding out that all, at least one of you has to have some very good knowledge of German; otherwise there’s no chance to find out about the special offers there are. Though it’s not completely impossible to stay for 3 or 4 days on a budget of 600 euros (it sure wouldn’t be for two Germans to have a nice vacation on that), I wouldn’t recommend a first-time traveler to try. As has been said, about double the amount would be fine.

1000 USD is enough for you both. If you take a private room you pay so around 60 Euro per night.
    http://www.bedandbreakfast.de/hamburg/index.php?lang=en
Ask here where your selected room is located.
In some rooms have breakfast some not. Some have coffee for free.

At noon a lot Restaurants offer “Mittagstisch” there you pay about 6 Euro per person.

At supper you buy a packet german black bread (0,69) a packet Knochenschinken (2,50) a packet Mettwurst (1,29) a glas of Delikatess Gurken (0,85) and a box of magarine (0,69) at Aldi.

    overall that will be 240 + 42 + 42 + 12 = 336 EUR
    Touristcard for all over Hamburg 3 days 2 x 15,60 = 31,20.

So all over for 500 Euro (about 750 US$) Hamburg 4 nights is possible with 2 persons. If you want some tips ask here, but don“t be astonished when all good answers have lots of thumbs down.

We have also a castle: There is a museo inside entrance 3 EUR per person.

Not including the flights it’s easily possible. Depending on where you go ie. cities or rural makes a difference. Bavaria is the most poppular tourist destination in germany, but it is also the richest and most expensive. Cities in germany are quite cheap if you don’t go super touristy. Germany is also very big on hostels which are dirt cheap, but not luxurious. It all depends on what you want to do. Go further north ie Berlin and Hamburg, then living will generally be cheaper (DO NOT GO TO FRANKFURT IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE). Also, as was already mentioned, if you do alot of the shopping in supermarkets the food should not be very expensive. Quite right also, are the mentions that the food provided in your particular hostel or B&B may be very cheap or free. In these sorts of locations, the norm is to provide a continental buffet, and lots of people take a roll or two and prepare a packed lunch during breakfast, with no extra fee. Hope this helps, if you need any more help, please just email me :)
