    Yes, it works but you would still need to book a seat or couchette (bunk)

    All night trains in Europe I have heard about, the last 5 years or more, had an compulsary reservations. For a seat it will be only a few Euro, for a couchette it can be much more. I found it cheaper to have my rail pass shorter and just pay for the couchette.

    Booking in advance is not needed for weekday trains in winter, but certainly for weekend trains in summer. For the rest, you can take your chances, often you can still book a seat the day before travel, or even on the day of travel, but most night trains do not allow overbooking anymore, so no ‘standing’ all night long. If a train is sold out you will have to wait for the next.
