Exchanging dollars in the US is expensive. Take just a few for snacks and such – take the rest out of your bank AS YOU NEED THEM from ATMs.

When you make a withdrawal from an ATM you will get the daily exchange rate done automatically by your bank. So, if you take out 200 pesos (about $18), your bank will record a withdrawal of $18, plus whatever fees your bank charges. Still better than carrying cash. There are ATMs all over Cancun.

Just bring dollars! They love American Money out there. Haggle everything you buy and never accept the first offer they give. Ask your travel agent or go online and search vacation tips cancun. Have fun!

You need to be more specific- how long are you going for? Is the hotel already paid for or you need to know how much everything all together will cost? Is it just 2 of you? Will you be staying at a pricey hotel? Did you want to go out to night clubs, go parasailing or any extra activities? Did you want to buy stuff or just enjoy the vacation? What maids are you talking about? the hotel chambermaids?

It depends on what you are going to use it for. If your hotel is being paid by credit card and all you need is walking around money, I always take about $100 USD for every day I’m going for. That is about $1100 pesos per day.

I never spend that much but I like to have plenty just in case I run across a bargain that I cannot resist buying.

I exchange my dollars for pesos before I leave the U.S. Here is the web site I use:

They will send the pesos in cash to you by UPS and it will arrive in a couple of days. You will only have to pay $12.95 per order for up to $1000 worth of pesos. Cool service.

The problem with just using U.S. dollars is that some people will attempt to screw you over on the exchange rate in Mexico. Its better to exchange prior to your trip.

    Good Luck! and have fun!

They don’t prefer American dollars … pesos are the currency in Mexico.

Don’t bring any pesos. Just change a couple hundred US dollars at the Mexican airport and use your ATM after that.

if you can, try to change all your usd at the border, only take like $15 dollars, if you try to exchange your dollars farther into mexico, they give you less and less,
