Petrol costs vary by season. It costs more in the summer than the winter, though as a general rule it is MUCH cheaper than anywhere in Europe.

The food depends on the part of the country and the sales tax in that given area. California and the Northeast are generally the most expensive.
You could stay at hostels, that would cut the costs when you aren’t camping.

Renting a car could cost a bit. I met a group from austrailia that did the same thing, but they bought their van in the US, and actually sold it off in Mexico for a profit (since used cars actually cost more in Mexico for some reason). For that reason, I would suggest you end your trip there, and sell it there…and you might not lose any money at all. The only kicker to buying a car and dumping it off in Mexico is it has to be at least ten years old, or you will pay an importation tax of 400 dollars on it. So, just buy a ten year old van. Plus…since Mexican families are generally so large, there is quite a demand for that type of vehicle there. You should be able to unload it.

If you are camping, yet…the best time is summer. It never really gets too hot, except in the southern states…and it gets extremely hot in the Southwest desert this time of year. If you are going in the winter, conversely, you might want to stick exclusively to the southern states because the weather will be mild there at this time of year. I don’t know if you are into winter sports, or other interests you have that would bring you into the mountain states. Regardless, you could find the route that works for you. It really depends where you are starting and ending.

Motel 6 is the lowest cost chain, and it costs under 40 dollars a night. For a group, motels might work out quite well. Just don’t tell them the correct number of people in your group when you check in…there is no way for them to check since you enter and exit the motel from outside.

There are hostels in most of the major cities.

So, in this case I would say the best thing for you to do is start out in the Northeast which is closest to the UK, and end up in Mexico and sell your car off there. You still have to provide more information because it is a very diverse and large country. You would race snowmobiles and dogsleds in some areas at some parts of the year, and you could surf in others.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it’s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
